Selected 16 Works to Receive 41 Million Won Creative Support Fund and Serialization on Major Platforms
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Dong-wook] Gyeongsangbuk-do announced on the 20th that the grand prize of the '1st Happy Gyeongbuk Youth Webtoon Contest' was awarded to Park Hyun-wook's submission, 'Noise Between Floors.'
This contest, held for the first time this year, was co-hosted by Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongsan City and organized by the Korea Cartoonists Cooperative. It took place from July 22 to August 18. The organizer selected the final 16 award-winning works through preliminary and main rounds of judging by webtoon experts from a total of 108 entries.
The grand prize-winning work, 'Noise Between Floors,' tells the story of a protagonist suffering from noise caused by a gangster family living upstairs. It was praised for its innovative direction that appropriately used spatial backgrounds in the webtoon story.
The webtoon category's excellence award winner, 'My Hometown' (Jung Young-in), features a story set in the Gyeongbuk region about the beginning of a young myth at a rural restaurant. The work received favorable reviews for the author's understanding and affection for Uiseong-gun.
Other award-winning works in the webtoon category include ▲ Excellence Awards: 'Jina's Butler' (Haering, Dwingurding), 'FireBird' (Kim Do-hyun) ▲ Encouragement Awards: 'Box Head and the Little Witch' (Daegaldokki), 'Hope Torture Office' (Choi Eun-kyung, Kim Young-joo), 'Myth Immersed in Another World' (Si-hwa) ▲ Gyeongbuk Content Awards: 'Yonga' (Han Ga), 'Cheongdo' (Seo Sang-bae).
In the web story category, the winners are ▲ Excellence Award: 'The Tyrant's Daughter is Unhappy' (Ji Eun-seol) ▲ Excellence Awards: 'Iron Armor' (Suyo), 'Although Newly Born, I am the Female Lead' (Ahn Jeong-eun) ▲ Encouragement Awards: 'The Baby Dragon Became the Butler' (Dalsatang), 'Life-Stealing Game' (Kim Milk), 'A Some Card' (Lee Eun-hyun) ▲ Gyeongbuk Content Award: 'The Gallbladder-Less Guy' (Park Ji-young, Jung So-yeon).
Prize money totaling 41 million KRW will be awarded, with 10 million KRW for the grand prize and 5 million KRW each for two excellence awards (one per category). Notably, the grand prize and excellence award-winning works will be given opportunities to be serialized on popular platforms such as KakaoPage and Ridibooks.
The award ceremony and exhibition will be held online due to COVID-19 and can be viewed around October on the Happy Gyeongbuk Youth Webtoon Contest website.
Kim Sang-cheol, Director of the Culture, Tourism and Sports Bureau, stated, "Webtoons are a high value-added cultural content industry actively developed into secondary and tertiary one-source multi-use (OSMU) content such as movies and dramas," adding, "Gyeongbuk will continue to promote various support policies to maximize the cultural and economic value of webtoon content."
