Daejeon COVID-19 Spread 'Slows Down'... Multiple Cluster Infections in the Past Month

Daejeon COVID-19 Spread 'Slows Down'... Multiple Cluster Infections in the Past Month Graph of confirmed cases in Daejeon from August 14 to September 17. During this period, a total of 183 confirmed cases were reported in Daejeon. Provided by Daejeon City.

[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] The trend of new coronavirus infection (COVID-19) cases in the Daejeon area has somewhat slowed down.

According to Daejeon City on the 19th, there were no local infections in Daejeon for a month after July, but starting with a confirmed case related to the Paju Starbucks on August 14, a total of 183 additional confirmed cases were reported until the 17th of this month.

As of the 17th, the cumulative number of confirmed cases in the Daejeon area is 350, of which 52.2% were confirmed in the past month. This is a larger number than the 167 cases reported from March to July, indicating that confirmed cases in the region have rapidly increased in a short period.

Weekly patient occurrence status showed an average of 5 cases per day in the third week of August (first case on the 14th), 5.8 cases in the fourth week, 5.7 cases in the first week of September, 7.1 cases in the second week, and 1.8 cases in the third week.

In particular, the infection reproduction number, which can determine whether the infection continues, peaked at 1.2 last week and dropped to 0.1 this week. Considering that the infection reproduction number above 1.0 generally indicates sustained infection, there is an observation that the spread of COVID-19 in the region has eased.

In Daejeon, the proportion of patients with unidentified infection routes averaged 10.7% weekly, which is lower than the national average of 20%.

Meanwhile, recently in Daejeon, when confirmed cases surged nationwide, local confirmed cases also surged, and when the national situation calmed down, this tendency was prominent.

Also, many of the confirmed cases occurring last month and this month were cluster infections through contact among family members and acquaintances, which is considered a distinctive feature of infectious disease spread in the region.

The status of confirmed cases through cluster infections includes 9 related to Indong Gymnasium, 14 related to Yuseong family infections, 7 related to Yuseong Bulgama, 20 related to Full Gospel Daejeon Woori Church, and 49 related to a health food briefing session.

A city official said, “The spread of COVID-19 in the Daejeon area is gradually slowing down,” adding, “However, considering the recent trend (characteristics) of infectious disease spread in the region, the upcoming Chuseok holiday could become another catalyst for further spread.”

He also said, “We ask that during the Chuseok holiday, people refrain from visiting their hometowns as much as possible and stay at home to rest.”
