[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Korea East-West Power is launching a waste-to-energy project that produces high-quality biofuel using domestic waste resources.
On the 18th, East-West Power announced that it signed a commercialization agreement for organic waste biofuel with the domestic biofuel company Kinaba at the Seoul Power Public Enterprise Cooperation Headquarters.
This project recycles domestic organic waste such as waste wood and livestock manure to produce eco-friendly biofuel, which is then used for power generation.
Under this agreement, Kinaba will stably produce and supply biofuel using organic waste. East-West Power will use the produced biofuel as fuel for power generation.
In particular, Kinaba holds a patent for hybrid hydrothermal carbonization technology, which is expected to help improve the environment by solving the odor problem, a drawback of organic waste.
By converting organic waste into biofuel through this project, imported wood pellets currently used in bioenergy co-firing power generation can be replaced with domestically produced biofuel.
This is also expected to contribute to greenhouse gas reduction, activation of the domestic biofuel industry, related technology development, and job creation.
An East-West Power official said, "This project is part of the 'New Deal Comprehensive Plan' established by East-West Power in line with the government's Korean New Deal policy. We will lead waste resource circulation by cooperating with technologically capable small and medium enterprises and contribute to the great transition from a carbon-dependent economy to a low-carbon economy."
Since December last year, East-West Power has been promoting the development and demonstration research of green pellet production technology using waste wood in collaboration with Kinaba and the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation of Hanyang University ERICA Campus.
In July, a demonstration plant was installed at the Dangjin Thermal Power Headquarters to conduct research on developing high-quality clean fuel to replace imported wood pellets.
