Gwangju Nam-gu Office Building Exterior 'Media Facade' Construction Kicks Off

Gwangju Nam-gu Office Building Exterior 'Media Facade' Construction Kicks Off

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] The construction of a 'media facade' that showcases visual beauty and various information in the form of videos using the outer wall of the Nam-gu Office building in Gwangju Metropolitan City is set to begin in earnest.

On the 18th, Nam-gu announced that Kim Byeong-nae, the district mayor, and Wi Seong-ho, president of the Gwangju Design Promotion Foundation, signed a 'media facade creation project consignment agreement' the day before.

The project aims to successfully promote the urban regeneration project around Baegun Square, the largest issue of the 7th local government term in Nam-gu, by utilizing media art, and to establish it as a representative nighttime scenic spot of Gwangju and a landmark of Nam-gu.

According to the agreement, Nam-gu plans to invest a total of 1 billion KRW to install a giant media facade on the outer wall of the Nam-gu Office building, targeting completion in the first half of next year.

Additionally, projectors will be installed on the rooftops of two buildings located to the left and right of the Nam-gu Office building to create a system that broadcasts media art works.

However, considering the structural uniqueness of the polygonal shape of the Nam-gu Office building's outer wall, the size of the media facade and the projector installation locations may be subject to change.

Currently, Nam-gu is promoting this project with role models including buildings around Times Square in New York, USA, the Sagrada Familia Cathedral in Barcelona, Spain, and the Sydney Opera House in Australia.

The plan is to create a cultural plaza around Baegun Square by incorporating various colors, lights, sounds, and warm stories of human life into each content, thereby promoting economic revitalization.

Kim Byeong-nae, mayor of Nam-gu, said, “The media facade creation project aims to attract many people by providing various attractions as the ultimate goal. Through this, we can revitalize the economy around Baegun Square and create a vibrant Nam-gu by attracting young people and others.”
