[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] Former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk expressed his apology to the public after his younger brother was found guilty.
On the 18th, Cho posted on his Facebook, "As a former high-ranking public official, I sincerely apologize to the people."
On the same day, the 21st Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Kim Miri) recognized the charge of obstruction of business related to recruitment corruption allegations against Cho's younger brother, Cho Kwon, former Secretary General of Woongdong Academy, and sentenced him to one year in prison.
Cho stated, "After I became a candidate for Minister of Justice, a wide-ranging investigation targeting my entire family was conducted, during which my brother's corruption was discovered," adding, "My brother is deeply remorseful." He also explained, "Among the charges prosecuted by the prosecution, the 'obstruction of business' charge related to recruitment corruption was acknowledged, leading to his detention in court. However, charges including breach of trust, false lawsuits against Woongdong Academy, evidence tampering, and aiding a criminal were all acquitted."
Furthermore, Cho said, "My brother will continue to reflect and face the trial," and "As his older brother, I will take care of him and support him until he pays his dues and regains his freedom."
