[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Hyundai Motor Company and its Genesis brand (hereinafter Genesis) announced on the 17th that they won a total of five awards, including one Gold Award, at the 2020 IDEA Design Awards.
The IDEA Design Awards, organized by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), are considered one of the world's top three design awards alongside Germany's iF Design Award and Red Dot Design Award.
Hyundai Motor received the Gold Award in the Commercial & Industrial Products category for the industrial wearable robot "VEX," while the electric vehicle concept cars "45" and "Prophecy" won the Bronze Award and were finalists, respectively, in the Automotive & Transportation category.
Notably, VEX, which won the highest award in the Commercial & Industrial Products category, is a vest-type exoskeleton robot independently developed last year by Hyundai Motor's robotics research team, Robotics Lab. It previously won the Innovation Product category at the 2020 Red Dot Design Awards in March.
VEX aims to reduce musculoskeletal disorders and improve work efficiency for workers who perform overhead tasks for extended periods in various industrial settings. Considering the characteristics of industrial sites, it was developed in a form that does not require electrical power supply. Weighing only 2.8 kg, it reduces the burden on workers and assists up to 5.5 kgf of force through a power compensation device that mimics the human shoulder joint structure.
Along with this, the good results of the two electric vehicle concept cars unveiled by Hyundai Motor last year at the IDEA Design Awards have raised expectations for the upcoming dedicated electric vehicles "Ioniq 5" and "Ioniq 6" based on them.
With this award, the concept car 45 received another design award following the main award in the Transportation Design category of the Product Design field at the 2020 iF Design Awards in February. The Prophecy, unveiled in March, features a body shape that flows like "one continuous curve" from the front to the rear of the vehicle, inspired by aerodynamic design.
Additionally, Genesis's dedicated brand experience center "Genesis Studio Hanam" and the "G90 Special Exhibition" were finalists in the Environment and Digital Interaction categories, respectively.
A Hyundai Motor and Genesis official stated, "The two electric vehicle concept cars from Hyundai Motor won IDEA Design Awards, showcasing the design direction of Ioniq electric vehicles worldwide. Furthermore, with three works winning awards including a Gold Award outside of automotive design, it demonstrated the expansion of Hyundai Motor and Genesis's design capabilities."
