"Child Sexualization" Qutis Controversy... US Netflix Subscription Cancellations Increase

[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] The controversy over the sexual objectification in Netflix's film 'Cuties' is spreading alarmingly.

The depiction of early teenage female characters wearing bikinis, high heels, and shaking their hips in an overly sexual manner is sparking debates about 'child sexualization.'

In particular, the character Amy, the female lead, is criticized for scenes where she engages in sexual behavior with an adult cousin to hide her mistakes or posts provocative photos on social media.

According to U.S. market research firm YipitData on the 17th, Netflix cancellation rates in the U.S. have increased more than eightfold since September 10 (compared to August). The hashtag '#CancelNetflix' is rapidly spreading on social media as people request to cancel their Netflix subscriptions.

Criticism is also mounting in U.S. political circles. Republican Texas Senator Ted Cruz has requested the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate the film's production and distribution. Senator Cruz asked, "Please verify whether Netflix or any individuals involved in the production of Cuties have violated federal laws regarding the production and distribution of child pornography."

Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii), who participated in the Democratic presidential primary, also pointed out on Twitter, "The child pornography film Cuties is helping to fuel child sex trafficking."

Directed by French filmmaker Ma?mouna Doucour?, 'Cuties' has sparked controversy immediately after its release on Netflix on the 9th. However, Netflix responded by stating, "'Cuties' is an award-winning film that powerfully addresses the pressures young girls face from society," and insisted that it is "a work opposing the sexual objectification of children."
