Export of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Systems for Mobile Generators to Swiss Company

[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Hyundai Motor Company has started exporting hydrogen fuel cell systems in non-automotive sectors as well. This is seen as a full-scale expansion of hydrogen business areas in line with the future eco-friendly era.

On the 16th, Hyundai Motor announced that it exported hydrogen fuel cell systems to Swiss hydrogen storage technology company ‘GRZ Technologies (hereafter GRZ)’ and a European energy solution startup through Busan Port.

The hydrogen fuel cell system exported by Hyundai is a 95kW-class fuel cell system installed in the hydrogen electric vehicle Nexo. GRZ and the energy solution startup importing this system plan to use it to manufacture emergency power supply units and eco-friendly mobile generators.

This overseas export of the hydrogen fuel cell system was carried out after receiving approval for export of national core technology from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in July, marking Hyundai’s first export of hydrogen fuel cell systems to non-automotive sectors.

This export is expected to be a great opportunity to showcase Korea’s excellent technology in Europe, an advanced eco-friendly market, as it is the first overseas sale of hydrogen fuel cell systems following the EU Commission’s hydrogen economy strategy announcement in July.

Through this export, Hyundai has achieved an important milestone that goes beyond the traditional business area of complete vehicle sales, accelerating the realization of a true hydrogen society not only in the automotive industry but across all industrial sectors.

Additionally, following ▲the world’s first mass production system for hydrogen electric vehicles ▲the world’s first mass production of hydrogen electric heavy trucks, Hyundai has further solidified its global technological leadership in the hydrogen industry.

Hyundai plans to use the export of hydrogen fuel cell systems to Europe as a stepping stone to expand overseas sales of hydrogen fuel cell systems globally, including in the United States and China, thereby broadening the scope of its hydrogen business.

Hyundai Motor Group Vice Chairman Euisun Chung also emphasized at the ‘Korean New Deal National Report Conference’ in July that “Fuel cell systems can be utilized in all areas of daily life such as ships, trains, urban aircraft, buildings, power plants, and even military use,” adding, “Electricity production using hydrogen will grow into a future eco-friendly energy solution and a core industry.”

Sehoon Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai’s Fuel Cell Business Division, stated, “This export of fuel cell systems to Europe has proven the diverse applicability and business scalability of Hyundai’s fuel cell systems.”
