Seoul City to Host Online Talk on "Youth-Led Alleyway Regeneration Plans" on the 15th

[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 13th that it will hold the 'Seoulst Alley Youth Online Talk' with young entrepreneurs who are revitalizing the space called 'alleyways' on the 15th.

Seoulst stands for transforming Seoul's alleyways (street) into Seoul's style (style) and starting (start) alleyway regeneration through the stories (story) of Seoul's youth. This online talk, held at the multipurpose hall on the 8th floor of Seoul City Hall, is a non-face-to-face talk show that can be watched and participated in live on the YouTube channel ‘Seoulst0915’.

This online talk was prepared to explore sustainable alleyway regeneration plans led by youth, utilizing alleyways and aging low-rise residential areas as alternatives to alleviate youth housing difficulties. It will be conducted in three parts.

The first part begins with a ‘Rap Battle Celebration Performance’ enjoyed with young people, hosted by comedian Kim Youngcheol, who will be appointed as Seoul's alleyway ambassador on the day. It includes screening the ‘Seoulst Story Video’ and greetings from internal and external guests. Additionally, popup stores of small shops active in Seoul’s alleyways will operate around the venue, and calligraphy of ‘365 Alleys of Seoul’ created by youth participants will be exhibited and broadcast online.

The second part, ‘Alley Youth Front Row - Talk Concert,’ moderated by Professor Mo Jongrin of Yonsei University, author of 'Capital of Alleyways,' features four young entrepreneurs as panelists. They will seek new directions for alleyway regeneration by finding connections between alleyways and youth. After Professor Mo’s presentation on ‘Capital of Alleyways & Millennial Generation Alleyways,’ the talk concert will proceed with two themes: 'It’s Okay, Living in Seoul' and 'Youth Speak of Hope in Alleyways.'

In 'It’s Okay, Living in Seoul,' presentations will cover youth housing issues and alleyway regeneration, including CEO Kim Dongchan’s talk on 'Youth Living in Seoul, Share Houses, and Alleyway Regeneration,' and Localstitch CEO Kim Sumin’s presentation on 'Alleyway Regeneration through Shared Platforms Utilizing Idle Spaces.'

In 'Youth Speak of Hope in Alleyways,' presentations will focus on alleyway regeneration that revitalizes local communities, including Factory Factory CEO Hong Dongwoo’s talk on 'Coexistence of Youth and Local Communities,' and Urbanplay CEO Hong Juseok’s presentation on 'Alleyway Regeneration Created by Local Content and Youth Local Creators.' After each presentation, a free talk show and audience interaction will be held between Professor Mo and the young entrepreneurs.

The third part will be a pre-briefing session on Seoul’s alleyway policies and an alleyway regeneration idea contest for youth. This contest serves as a preliminary explanation for the alleyway regeneration category of the ‘11th Best Village Making Student Contest,’ with submissions accepted in November and winners selected in December.

Ryu Hoon, Director of Seoul City’s Urban Regeneration Office, said, “This online talk was held to explore new directions for alleyway regeneration and sustainable urban regeneration through youth participation. We will promote alleyway regeneration by preparing various plans led by youth and favorable for youth, such as solving housing difficulties and discovering local content for youth entrepreneurship.”
