Creating a Safe Bicycle Use Environment to Prevent Accidents for Dual Purposes, with Future Expansion to Seongsu-dong Area
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) will pilot the installation of ‘Pictogram Sign Blocks’ using vivid pictogram characters to prevent safety accidents on bicycle lanes shared by pedestrians and cyclists.
‘Pictogram Sign Blocks’ are ground guidance blocks that use pictograms?graphic characters designed for easy and quick understanding by anyone?and are made from colored materials with surfaces resistant to peeling, maintaining their color vividly over a long period so they can be recognized from a distance.
This initiative aims to prevent safety accidents that may occur because existing signs are hard to notice due to the proliferation of commercial signs and street trees, making it difficult to distinguish bicycle lanes from regular roads.
The district plans to first install ‘Pictogram Sign Blocks’ at 50-meter intervals along a 430-meter section of the bicycle lane from Majang 2-gyo Bridge to Majang Samgeori in Majang-dong by early October.
Subsequently, with additional budget secured, the district plans to install more along a 3.9 km extension of bicycle lanes on Achasan-ro and Gwangnaru-ro in Seongsu-dong, identified as the areas with the highest bicycle traffic in Seongdong-gu.
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, “Bicycles are gaining importance as a transportation mode in the post-COVID era where social distancing is essential, as well as for easing traffic congestion and being an eco-friendly transport option. We will continue to strive to build infrastructure so that bicycles can be used conveniently and safely anytime, anywhere.”
