Seoul City Approves Revision of 'Bukchon District Unit Plan Decision'
[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] Convenience facilities such as laundromats and pharmacies will be allowed to be installed in the Bukchon area of Jongno-gu, Seoul, which is a Hanok-dense area.
On the 9th, Seoul City held a joint urban and architectural committee meeting and announced on the 10th that it had approved amendments to the 'Bukchon District Unit Plan Decision' and the 'Architectural Asset Promotion Zone Designation and Management Plan' for 1,128,372.7㎡ in the Bukchon area including Gahoe-dong, Samcheong-dong, and Anguk-dong in Jongno-gu.
The Bukchon area, located between Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung Palaces, is a Hanok-dense area. With this district unit plan amendment, installation of convenience facilities such as laundromats, retail stores, pharmacies, and Korean medicine clinics has become possible. Additionally, cultural and assembly facilities such as galleries and traditional-related rest restaurants are also permitted.
Along with this, the area will be designated as an Architectural Asset Promotion Zone for systematic preservation and management of Hanok and other architectural assets, and architectural special cases will be applied. Accordingly, Hanok and architectural assets within the zone will be allowed to be built up to a maximum building coverage ratio of 90%, and restrictions on building setbacks, building line limitations, and parking installation standards will be relaxed.
Meanwhile, at the meeting, Seoul City postponed the decision regarding the park development of the Songhyeon-dong 48-9 area owned by Korean Air. The city plans to review purchase methods such as appraisal in consultation with Korean Air and submit it for review in early October. However, Seoul City reaffirmed the existing park development policy, stating, "The Songhyeon-dong site will be developed into a cultural park suitable for its location and symbolism."
