[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Bong-ju] It was recently revealed that teachers, administrative staff, and even the principal at an elementary school held a Makgeolli drinking party together. The Office of Education took disciplinary action only after a petition was posted on the Blue House website, four months later.

According to the Jeonbuk Office of Education on the 9th, staff at an elementary school in Gochang took advantage of the absence of students due to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) to drink alcohol.

It was confirmed that not only regular teachers but also administrative staff and the principal drank together.

The investigation by the Jeonbuk Office of Education revealed that they drank about 20 times from March to May.

Regarding this, a representative of the elementary school said, "Whenever we came to work and had lunch, alcohol was served every day. There were many occasions when drinking that started at lunchtime continued until leaving work."

Moreover, the incident was reported to the Jeonbuk Office of Education in early May, but no action was taken during that time. When the Jeonbuk Office of Education conducted a covert inspection of the elementary school, several bottles of Makgeolli were found in the milk storage refrigerator in the cafeteria.

Then, after a post was made on the Blue House National Petition Board, disciplinary action was taken eight days later at the end of last month. The disciplinary measures were delayed for four months and only taken after the Blue House petition was posted.

However, only the contract teacher had their contract terminated, while other staff received warnings or are undergoing disciplinary procedures. The principal, as the manager, was given a one-month suspension. The Jeonbuk Office of Education explained that the disciplinary action was delayed due to the need for an accurate investigation.
