[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kang Woo-kwon] Changwon National University in Gyeongnam announced on the 8th that it has established the country's first customized advanced curriculum called the ‘Smart Manufacturing Convergence Major’ to recruit freshmen for the 2021 academic year and to train experts in smart manufacturing convergence.
The Smart Manufacturing Convergence Major at Changwon National University anticipates that the manufacturing industry and future industries will evolve beyond the automation stages of assembly and processing through the 4th Industrial Revolution into artificial intelligence and customized mass production methods. The establishment and expansion of smart manufacturing industries are expected to become an essential strategy for sustainable domestic economic growth.
Accordingly, future manufacturing will require only a select group of core convergence engineers possessing knowledge in informatization, unmanned systems, and smart manufacturing fields. To this end, Changwon National University has established the Smart Manufacturing Convergence Major to provide a customized and practical convergence curriculum for advanced manufacturing engineering and manufacturing data analysis (manufacturing AI) fields.
Changwon National University will operate a graduate cooperative program simultaneously with the establishment of the Smart Manufacturing Convergence Major for the purpose of cultivating advanced personnel in smart manufacturing.
The ‘Smart Manufacturing Convergence Major,’ which will begin recruiting freshmen through early admission in the 2021 academic year, plans to implement differentiated support systems from existing departments to attract outstanding applicants and alleviate the concentration of talent in the Seoul metropolitan area.
As a nationally designated department, the ‘Smart Manufacturing Convergence Major’ will receive educational funding from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, and Changwon City. It will provide full scholarships, credit acquisition programs linked with prestigious overseas universities such as RWTH Aachen University and the University of Waterloo, as well as opportunities for employment and training at overseas companies.
Jo Young-tae, head of the Smart Manufacturing Convergence Major at Changwon National University, explained, “To cultivate outstanding talent, we will do our best by providing full scholarships and living expenses support, various employment programs to assist job-seeking activities, and educational funding.”
