Approximately 7.9 Million Won → 63 Million Won... An 8-Fold Increase
▲Macallan 18 Years Old
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] A man in his 20s from the UK has gained attention for using the whiskey he received every year as a birthday gift from his father since birth to fund the purchase of a house.
According to the BBC in the UK on the 6th (local time), Matthew Robson, born in 1992 in Taunton, England, has received an 18-year-old Macallan whiskey from his father, Pete Robson, every year on his birthday for the past 28 years.
The amount Pete spent on this was about ?5,000 (approximately 7.9 million KRW) at face value.
However, the value of the whiskey has increased over time due to its rarity, now reaching up to ?40,000 (approximately 63 million KRW).
Matthew decided to sell the carefully collected whiskey as a set to contribute towards buying a house.
Pete said, "When I gave the whiskey as a gift, I strictly instructed my son never to open and drink it, but over time it became an emergency fund."
He revealed that he initially gave the whiskey as a fun gift rather than an investment to commemorate his son's birth.
He said, "I thought it would be interesting that if I bought one bottle of 18-year-old whiskey every year on his birthday, by the time my son turned 18, he would have 18 bottles of 18-year-old whiskey."
Of course, Matthew also received other gifts on his birthdays.
Whiskey broker Lach Littler commented, "The value of Macallan has risen tremendously over the past 5 to 10 years," and added, "The true charm of Matthew's collection is the wide range of production years."
Littler also mentioned that inquiries about purchasing Matthew's whiskey have come from places such as New York in the US and Asia.
