The World Honam Association Donates 55 Million Won in 'Hometown Love Donations and Scholarships'

[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province announced on the 3rd that the World Honam Hometown Association Federation (President Kim Young-yoon) donated 33 million won as 'Hometown Love Fund' and 22 million won as 'Hometown Love Scholarship.'


At the donation ceremony, Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok, former presidents of the World Honam Hometown Association Federation Kim Won-bong (2nd) and Lee Dong-soo (3rd), and Secretary General Jeong Kwang-il attended.


The donated 'Hometown Love Fund' will be distributed to residents in need of economic assistance through the Community Chest of Korea, and the 'Hometown Love Scholarship' will be given to 44 youths in the Jeonnam region from financially disadvantaged families, with each receiving 500,000 won.


Former president Lee Dong-soo of the World Honam Hometown Association said, "Although everyone is facing difficulties due to COVID-19, hometown compatriots overseas voluntarily raised funds little by little to help those in need in our hometown," adding, "We hope this will provide some strength to the residents."


He continued, "From 2017 to last year, we provided scholarships totaling 180 million won to 180 youths in Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Jeonbuk," and added, "We hope the 'Hometown Love Scholarship' will inspire dreams and hope in students and help them grow into talents who will lead the future of the local community."


Governor Kim said, "The hometown compatriots have upheld the pride of Honam people even in distant foreign countries and contributed to the development of their hometown, always taking the lead whenever the homeland faced difficulties," and added, "The donated funds will be a great comfort to residents in economic hardship, and the scholarships will serve as a foundation for students in difficult circumstances to grow upright and healthy."


The World Honam Hometown Association currently operates 68 branches in 25 countries and has continuously practiced hometown love by conducting overseas study tour invitation projects for about 270 youths from Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Jeonbuk since 2001 until last year.
