3D Addresses to Be Introduced for Facilities and Open Spaces... Applied in 5 Smart Cities

Ministry of the Interior and Safety Accelerates Development of Innovation Growth Industry Model Based on Advanced Address System

3D Addresses to Be Introduced for Facilities and Open Spaces... Applied in 5 Smart Cities

[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] The 'Address System Advancement Project,' which expands addresses currently assigned mainly to roads and buildings to include objects (facilities) and spaces (open areas), will be first applied to five smart cities starting next year.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 2nd that based on the results of the pilot project for address system advancement initiated in 2018, three-dimensional (3D) spatial addresses will be assigned to five smart cities from next year, and a business agreement with related organizations will be signed on the 3rd.

Through this agreement, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Korea Agency for Infrastructure Technology Advancement (Siheung and Daegu research demonstration), Korea Land and Housing Corporation (Sejong Smart City), Korea Water Resources Corporation (Busan Eco Delta City), and Korea Land and Geospatial Informatix Corporation (Jeonju Digital Twin) will jointly promote the Smart City Address System Advancement Project until 2025.

The government plans to first assign 3D addresses to these smart cities and then gradually expand the application nationwide.

The address system advancement project converts the current two-dimensional (2D) road name address system into a 3D spatial address system and expands address assignment from buildings only to underground areas, facilities, and spaces. Once the address system is advanced to 3D, addresses can be assigned to food trucks operating temporarily on roads, underground shopping malls located beneath roads, and bridges suspended in the air, thereby establishing a foundation for applying core Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies such as artificial intelligence, voice recognition, big data, and digital twin.

To this end, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety has been conducting pilot projects at locations such as Jamsil Station in Songpa-gu, Seoul (underground space, 2020), a rest area in Jincheon-gun, Chungbuk (facility, 2019), and parks in Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do (space, 2018).

In this regard, the Ministry will also hold the '2020 Address-Based Innovative Growth Industry Conference' online over two days on the 3rd and 4th.

This conference, conducted via video and YouTube broadcasts, is designed to share the results of the address system advancement pilot projects conducted so far and the progress of the pilot project for developing address-based innovative growth industry models, as well as to gather feedback. It will also present the progress of pilot projects developing innovative growth industry models that apply core technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution based on addresses, which serve as a means of location communication between people and devices.

Representative pilot projects include drone delivery (Chungnam, Jeonnam) that supports drone takeoff and landing by assigning addresses to drone delivery points, autonomous robot delivery (Daejeon) that establishes robot movement routes, and autonomous vehicle parking (Seoul Songpa) that assigns addresses to parking lots and uses video recognition for guidance signs.

Ideas from five teams that advanced to the finals through the 'Address-Based Industry Creation Idea Contest' held in July and August will also be unveiled.

Lee Jae-gwan, Director of Local Autonomy and Decentralization at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, said, "Since addresses are an important means of location communication in the digital society, we will ensure that addresses become not only a convenience for daily life and public safety but also a driving force for new industries in the future society."
