[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Kia Motors' minivan Carnival, the unrivaled family car, has returned with a completely redesigned model after 6 years. Since the launch of the 3rd generation model in 2014, the Carnival has dominated the domestic minivan market alongside Hyundai's Starex for the past six years. With the release of the 4th generation fully redesigned model, the Carnival is expected to dominate the family car market, surpassing competing models including large SUVs. As outdoor activities such as car camping and camping have increased due to the spread of COVID-19, the popularity of minivans has soared. We took a closer look at the transformation of the 4th generation Carnival by test-driving the new Carnival 2.2 diesel model.

-The design is noticeably more sophisticated than the previous generation model.

▲The design concept of the new Carnival is 'majestic volume.' The sophisticated yet grand design stands out. The front features a 'Symphonic Architecture' radiator grille inspired by the dynamic yet balanced stage of an orchestra conductor, catching the eye. The headlamps and grille are seamlessly connected, giving a luxurious and grand impression. On the side, a side character line runs from the headlamps to the rear lamps in one continuous line, adding dynamism. The C-pillar is adorned with a unique three-dimensional chrome garnish, enhancing the premium feel. The rear features horizontally designed rear combination lamps that unify with the front design. The Carnival vehicle lettering is designed in cursive, adding a refined touch.

-Space utilization seems to be the most important aspect for the Carnival.

▲The new Carnival applies the new N3 platform, which expands space while increasing body rigidity. The wheelbase, which determines the vehicle's space, has been extended by 30mm compared to the previous generation, securing the largest interior space in its class. The overall length and width have also increased by 40mm and 10mm, respectively, to 5155mm and 1995mm. In terms of wheelbase, the Carnival measures 3090mm, larger than the Palisade (2900mm) and GV80 (2955mm), but slightly smaller than the Starex (3200mm). The vehicle I test-drove was a 7-seater. Using the sinking seats that fold the 3rd-row seats to the same height as the trunk floor, there is enough space and height to load a stroller without folding it. Even when the 3rd-row seats are upright and sitting in the last row, there is ample legroom with about a fist-sized gap between the knees and the 2nd-row seats. Additionally, the C-pillar window has been lowered by 69mm compared to the previous generation, allowing for an open and spacious feeling without any sense of confinement when seated in the 3rd row.

There is also an expandable storage space (5.5ℓ) behind the center console, allowing the 2nd-row passengers to use a large drawer. This is convenient for storing children's miscellaneous items when used as a family car. USB ports are installed in both the 2nd and 3rd-row seats, enabling multiple passengers to charge their smartphones simultaneously.

-How does it feel to sit in the driver's seat?

▲The driver's seat of the new Carnival is designed to resemble the interior of a spaceship. The 12.3-inch cluster and 12.3-inch navigation screen are connected seamlessly in a panoramic display, giving a futuristic feel. The center fascia buttons are touch-operated, making the interface clean and easy to use. An electronic shift dial replaces the traditional gear lever. The Nappa leather seats provide a premium feel that passes the mark. The horizontal air vents make the interior appear more spacious. However, it was disappointing that the head-up display is not available. Beginner drivers often rely heavily on the head-up display to view navigation easily.

-How about the actual driving experience?

▲The test vehicle was the 2.2 diesel model. Naturally, the typical vibration and noise of diesel vehicles should be considered. The engine power felt slightly insufficient relative to the vehicle's size and weight. However, as a family car, the driving performance and ride comfort are impeccable. Since this vehicle is intended for carrying children, it is not designed for dynamic driving performance like rapid acceleration. The diesel model is equipped with the Smartstream D 2.2 engine, delivering a maximum output of 202 horsepower and a maximum torque of 45.0 kgf·m. Fuel efficiency is rated at a combined 12.6 km/ℓ (7-seater, 19-inch tires). On a 70 km round trip from Gwangjin-gu, Seoul to Namyangju, I confirmed a fuel efficiency of 14.3 km/ℓ, exceeding the official rating.

Various convenience features for the driver are also equipped, including ▲Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist ▲Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist ▲Highway Driving Assist ▲Blind-Spot View Monitor ▲Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, as well as navigation-based Smart Cruise Control. For example, when cruise control is set to 100 km/h on the highway and a speed enforcement camera at 80 km/h or a specific road section appears, the vehicle automatically reduces speed accordingly. Additionally, before entering a tunnel, the system activates a function that blocks outside air from entering the vehicle. This thoughtful consideration extends not only to the driver but also to the passengers, making it truly outstanding.

-What about convenience features for other passengers?

▲First, pressing a single button located at the front part of the rear door allows the sliding door to open and close automatically. When rear passengers exit the vehicle, if motorcycles or bicycles are detected from behind, the sliding door remains locked and a warning sound is emitted to help prevent accidents. At night, when the sliding door opens, a spot lamp illuminates the ground, enabling safe boarding and alighting.

Additionally, for the first time in its class, rear seat voice recognition has been applied. Previously, only the driver could control the air conditioning, navigation, and Bluetooth audio, but now rear passengers can control these features by voice. For example, sitting in the back seat, saying "Turn on the air conditioner" will be recognized and adjusted by the vehicle.

Most notably, the highlight of the new Carnival is the premium relaxation seats applied to the 2nd row (exclusive to the 7-seater). With just one touch of a button, the seat reclines backward, distributing the load concentrated on the hips and lower back to create the most comfortable seat position. This feature is very useful for long-distance travel. However, it was disappointing that the premium relaxation seat only activates when the seat position is manually adjusted to secure enough space. It would be great if the next generation includes a function that automatically adjusts the seat position appropriately with one touch.

-What is your overall impression of the new Carnival? Who would it be good for?

▲The new Carnival is a vehicle that stands out for its sophisticated design, ample space, and practical convenience features for passengers. Although there are some minor shortcomings in engine performance and relaxation seats, considering the price, it is a car with many advantages overall. The lowest trim of the Carnival diesel 2.2 model, Prestige (9-seater), starts at 31.6 million KRW, and the top trim, Signature, starts at 41.05 million KRW for the 9-seater. It would be highly satisfying for those who enjoy family trips, car camping, and outdoor activities, families practicing shared childcare with parents and children, and business owners who frequently transport guests for golf or official events to use the Carnival for various purposes.
