[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] The enactment of a special law to ensure the smooth opening of Korea Electric Power Corporation University (KEPCO University) in March 2022 is set to accelerate.
On the 27th, Shin Jeong-hoon, a member of the National Assembly from the Democratic Party of Korea (Jeonnam Naju·Hwasun), stated, "The establishment of KEPCO University is a 'presidential pledge' and a national policy reflected in the 'five-year national administration plan,' requiring strong support not only from the political sphere but also from the entire government."
He continued, "To secure stable finances and legal status for KEPCO University, we are preparing to propose a member-initiated bill for the KEPCO University Special Act during this regular session of the National Assembly."
The special bill that Assemblyman Shin is preparing is expected to include provisions for securing finances and budget support, autonomous school management, and special regulations to support the opening in 2022.
It is reported that a full opening in 2022 under the current Private School Act is difficult. The basic plan for KEPCO University submitted to the government also targets a partial opening in 2022.
Assemblyman Shin Jeong-hoon explained, "Minimum standards for opening, such as building area and leased classrooms, should be included in the special law as conditions for opening and need to be discussed with the Ministry of Education and others. We have not confirmed the Ministry of Education's position that leased classrooms reported in some media are not considered."
He added, "The opening of KEPCO University in 2022 depends on meeting minimum standards and establishing a legal basis through the special law. We will do our best to ensure the enactment of the special law while encouraging more active on-site process management by KEPCO, so that the university can definitely open in 2022."
