On the 26th, the city announced that it received the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award for recognizing the cultural excellence of its Urban Regeneration New Deal project at the ‘2020 Korea Urban Regeneration Symposium’ recently held in Cheongju, Chungbuk.

At this symposium, the city was invited as a leading city in the Urban Regeneration New Deal sector and presented a case study under the theme ‘Urban Regeneration where People, Ecology, and Culture Live.’

In the case presentation, Shin Gye-sook, head of Jeonju Social Solidarity Support Group, introduced ▲ the Seohak-dong Urban Regeneration New Deal project, created together by artists and residents ▲ the Palbok Art Factory, which regenerated an old abandoned factory into a complex cultural space ▲ and the Seonosong Art Village project, which transformed a red-light district into a space where women’s rights and culture and arts flourish.

Prior to this, the city has been promoting Urban Regeneration New Deal projects in four zones including traditional culture-centered urban regeneration, Jeonju Station area innovation growth renaissance, Yongmeori Yeouiju Village, and Seohak-dong Art Village. Additionally, urban regeneration projects worth a total of 120 billion KRW are underway in four locations including Namnosong-dong Saetteul Village and Daga-dong Urban Regeneration Recognition Project.

Director Shin said, “Jeonju City, the number one city for urban regeneration in Korea, is receiving attention from central government ministries and other local governments as a model case for urban regeneration projects,” adding, “We will continue to do our best to carry out urban regeneration projects that citizens can feel, that citizens cultivate together, and that transform life and the city.”

Meanwhile, the city was recognized for the excellence of its urban regeneration projects by receiving the Presidential Award at the Sustainable Development Awards for the Seonmi Village Cultural Regeneration Project and the Minister’s Award at the Korea Local Autonomy Management Competition for the Palbok Art Factory, which transformed abandoned industrial facilities into cultural and artistic hubs.
