[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] On the 25th, Jeong Pil-mo, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea (pictured), introduced the "Act on the Activation and Support of Media Education" to strengthen media education policies.
The bill proposed by Representative Jeong Pil-mo includes ▲ the establishment of a definition for media education, ▲ the establishment of a Media Education Committee to coordinate and review major policies and projects, and ▲ the formulation and evaluation of a comprehensive media education plan.
Representative Jeong stated, "As the scope of media expands to include SNS and OTT, the existing fragmented education methods cannot guarantee proper media usage. Through the establishment of the Media Education Committee, I hope media education will be conducted in a more systematic and comprehensive manner."
In fact, although the use of SNS and OTT has recently expanded, side effects such as the production and distribution of indiscriminate information like false and manipulated information (fake news) have also increased. Regarding the recent COVID-19 quarantine, false information such as "health centers are spreading the coronavirus" was circulated.
Jeong Pil-mo's office explained, "Although the importance of media education, which enables discerning use of media distributed online, is growing day by day, the current government policies and projects related to media education are scattered across the Korea Communications Commission, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Ministry of Education, and their affiliated organizations, making comprehensive implementation difficult. This criticism led to the proposal of this bill."
