[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] As confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) surge, the Democratic Party of Korea is reportedly discussing the timing, scope, and method of disbursing the second disaster relief fund.
On the 23rd, Democratic Party spokesperson Heo Yoon-jung told reporters, “The speed of COVID-19 spread has far exceeded the expected range, so naturally, we do not want to imagine the worst-case scenario,” but added, “However, if we do not review policies to respond in advance when problems arise, we may miss the exact timing when the policy should be implemented. Therefore, it is correct to say that we are discussing while considering such scenarios.”
Spokesperson Heo said that at the party’s Policy Committee level, “Various scenarios are being reviewed depending on the speed and scope of the spread,” and stated, “We need to consider the scale, scope, and region altogether. If people cannot consume even if they want to, the meaning of the disaster relief fund is lost, so we are also reviewing online consumption depending on the payment method.”
The Democratic Party is reportedly viewing the optimal timing for disbursing the second disaster relief fund as before Chuseok. Heo emphasized, “Ironically, the best plan right now is to disburse before Chuseok to achieve effectiveness.”
Regarding selective disbursement, which has been suggested by some, he said, “A practical review by the financial authorities is realistically necessary. We plan to conduct a comprehensive review reflecting various opinions.”
