Sebastian Seung: "Security Determines Company Success... Samsung Prioritizes Security and Privacy"

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] "Security has now become so important that it can determine the success or failure of a company. Defense against security threats must always be prepared."

Seunghyun Jun (Sebastian Seung), Head of Samsung Research (President), emphasized the importance of security, saying, "Today's IT systems are massive but very vulnerable to attacks." This was stated in his welcoming speech at the '4th Samsung Security Technology Forum (SSTF)' held by Samsung Electronics on the 18th. This is the first recruitment case since Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong of Samsung Electronics announced the 'New Samsung' vision at a national press conference last May, expressing his intention to actively bring in talented external personnel. This forum serves as his debut stage since taking charge of the organization overseeing Samsung Electronics' research.

Samsung Electronics has been holding the Samsung Security Technology Forum annually since 2017 to expand the software base and nurture talent in the field of security technology. This time, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the forum was held online for the first time.

The theme of this forum was "Time to Rethink Privacy." Seunghyun Jun predicted, "As lifestyles increasingly rely on online platforms every year and these changes accelerate due to COVID-19, digital security and personal information protection will face bigger and more important challenges in the future."

He added, "Samsung Electronics places the utmost importance on security and privacy to create the world's best products and services," emphasizing, "We are constantly striving to develop technologies that solve current security issues." Furthermore, he noted that Samsung Electronics must develop technology not only through technical research but also by considering ethics, human rights, and social ideals.

The keynote speeches featured Hwang Yongho, Head of Security Team at Samsung Research (Senior Vice President), Ahn Giljun, Head of Security Team at the Wireless Business Division (Executive Vice President), world-renowned security experts Professor Elisa Bertino from Purdue University, USA, Professor Nicholas Papernot from the University of Toronto, Canada, and Professor Jang Youngjin from Oregon State University, USA.

Senior Vice President Hwang and Executive Vice President Ahn spoke on the topic "Security and Privacy Protection for a Safe User Experience (UX)." Professor Bertino lectured on "Privacy in the Era of Big Data, Machine Learning, Internet of Things (IoT), and 5G," discussing hacking attacks and methods in 5G communication network environments. Professor Papernot gave a lecture on "Designing Machine Learning Systems for Security and Privacy." Professor Jang introduced "Practical Solutions to Complement Vulnerabilities in Data Protection during Cloud Execution and Secure Outsourcing."

At the forum, Samsung Research researchers also showcased ongoing security technology research and security features applied to Samsung products. A hacking experience zone was also set up, allowing anyone from hacking beginners to experts to participate.
