Seongbuk-gu Energy Self-Reliant Village Collaborative Governance Project Begins

From August to December, 13 Community Energy Self-Reliant Village Projects to be Promoted... Expected to be an Opportunity for Residents to Lead the Formation of an Energy Self-Reliant Culture

Seongbuk-gu Energy Self-Reliant Village Collaborative Governance Project Begins

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Seungro Lee), which has been leading efforts to reduce greenhouse gases through the operation of the Seongbuk Power Saving Station and the implementation of the Eco Mileage system, is once again taking action for the environment by launching the ‘Seongbuk-gu Energy Self-Reliant Village’ project at the community and village level to respond to intensifying climate change.

The ‘Seongbuk-gu Energy Self-Reliant Village’ project is an initiative that has been promoted since 2020 under the Seoul City public contest project ‘Autonomous District-led Energy Self-Reliant Village,’ where Seongbuk-gu received a total budget of 37 million KRW to carry out activities aimed at energy saving and transition at the village and community level.

In July, Seongbuk-gu recruited resident groups and organizations, selecting a total of 13 villages and communities.

This project requires a collaborative governance process between the district and residents. Through this, it provides an opportunity to strengthen the capacity of residents to become the main agents of district administration. Each village and community will carry out energy-saving activities such as training energy activists or planning climate change and energy-related education for residents.

Additionally, residents will take the lead in establishing the foundation for a culture of energy self-reliance that can drive the transition to renewable energy.

On the 11th, ahead of the project launch, an educational session titled ‘Let’s Start the Energy Self-Reliant Village Like This’ was held for representatives and residents of each village and community to ensure the successful promotion of the ‘Seongbuk-gu Energy Self-Reliant Village’ project.

During the session, participation methods and cases related to environmental changes were shared. A resident attendee, Mr./Ms. Lee (age 40), said, “I feel very proud that our district is promoting the Energy Self-Reliant Village project, and I will take the lead in practicing energy saving and responding to climate change within our village and community.”

A Seongbuk-gu official stated that they have successfully prepared for the start of the ‘2020 Seongbuk-gu Energy Self-Reliant Village’ operation by signing agreements with each village and community for project promotion and will make every effort to efficiently carry out next year’s project as well.
