"How to Write Your College Admission Personal Statement"

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Yongsan-gu (Mayor Seongjang Hyun) will provide 1:1 guidance on self-introduction letters (SIL) and interviews for high school seniors and college entrance exam candidates preparing for the 2021 academic year college admissions early decision process.

Writing the SIL is one of the most challenging areas for examinees during college preparation. This is because students have rarely learned proper writing skills at school, and the evaluation criteria for SIL keep changing.

Accordingly, the district will deploy five teachers from the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education’s College Admission Guidance Support Team to provide 1:1 instruction on SIL writing methods to 40 students.

The sessions will be conducted twice, each lasting 40 minutes, in a 1:1 format, where students will be taught how to write their SIL based on an analysis of their school records. The location is the native speaker foreign language classroom on the first floor of Yongsan Dream Tree Complex.

Students who wish to participate can apply through the Yongsan-gu Education Comprehensive Portal. Applications open at 9 a.m. on the 18th on a first-come, first-served basis. Five students per session will be accepted, with a total of eight sessions. Applicants must select their preferred session when applying.

The district has also prepared customized mock interviews on October 9. Ten teachers from the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education’s College Admission Guidance Support Team will serve as interviewers to conduct 1:1 mock interviews. Based on the SIL and school records, instructors will ask tailored questions.

The mock interviews will be held at the Yongsan Art Hall Exhibition Hall (basement level 1 of Yongsan-gu Office), with each interview lasting 30 minutes. Participants can learn interview skills directly from instructors or identify mistakes in their responses during the process.

Applications for the mock interviews open at 9 a.m. on September 2. Each session will accept 10 participants, with a total of eight sessions recruiting 80 students. Applications can be submitted through the district’s Education Comprehensive Portal.

There is no charge for the SIL and interview guidance. Participants will also receive a college admission guidance booklet created by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education’s Education Research Information Center.

Seongjang Hyun, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, “Examinees are facing many difficulties due to the novel coronavirus infection,” and added, “We will also thoroughly implement quarantine measures to prevent the spread of infectious diseases during the program.”
