[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Joe Biden, former Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate in the United States, and his running mate Senator Kamala Harris expressed condolences on the 16th (local time) over the passing of Robert S. Trump, younger brother of U.S. President Donald Trump, who died the day before.

According to Fox News and others, former Vice President Biden tweeted on the day, "Mr. President, Jill and I are saddened to hear that your brother Robert has passed away," adding, "I know the tremendous pain of losing a loved one. And I know how important family is in moments like this," expressing his condolences. He continued, "I want you to know that our prayers are with all of you."

Former Vice President Biden experienced the loss of his eldest son Beau Biden to brain cancer in 2015. Beau Biden was a notable figure during the process when Biden selected Senator Harris as his running mate. At their first joint press conference after the nomination, Biden mentioned, "I got to know who Kamala is through my son Beau," noting that Beau Biden and Senator Harris had served as Attorney General of Delaware and Attorney General of California, respectively, and "they used to talk several times a day."

Senator Harris also retweeted Biden’s tweet on Twitter, writing, "Doug (her husband) and I send our deepest condolences and prayers to the entire Trump family along with the Biden family during this difficult time," adding, "Losing a loved one is never easy, but please know that we are thinking of you."

Earlier that day, the White House announced through a statement from President Trump that his brother Robert had passed away at the age of 71. President Trump expressed his condolences, saying, "It is with heavy heart that I announce my wonderful brother Robert peacefully passed away tonight," adding, "He was not just a brother but my best friend. I will miss him very much, but we will meet again."
