[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Bong-ju] An octogenarian was sentenced to prison for stabbing and killing his ex-wife with a weapon while they were both hospitalized in the same hospital.

The Gwangju District Court's 11th Criminal Division (Presiding Judge Jeong Ji-seon) announced on the 14th that it sentenced Mr. A (82), who was charged with murder, to eight years in prison.

Mr. A was tried for stabbing his ex-wife, Ms. B (78, female), to death during an argument at a hospital in Gyeonggi Province last September.

After divorcing about 45 years ago, Mr. A and the victim lived separately, but after he injured his back, their children suggested that it would be better for him to be hospitalized together with their mother, who was in a nursing hospital. Consequently, he was admitted with the victim and took care of her.

Mr. A became enraged after hearing Ms. B say, "Are you treating me well just to sell the apartment and take the money away from me?" and continued arguing, which led to the crime.

The court stated, "Murder, which infringes on human life, is a serious crime that cannot be remedied by any means. Severe punishment corresponding to the crime is necessary." However, it also explained the sentencing rationale, saying, "Considering that Mr. A was hospitalized in the same hospital as Ms. B to help care for her in order to reduce the burden on their children, that the crime was committed impulsively after hearing unpleasant words, and that Mr. A is showing remorse."
