[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hong Jaehee] Iksan City, Jeonbuk, expressed gratitude to Lee Seok-gyu (age 95), the province's only surviving independence activist, ahead of the 75th Liberation Day.

On the 14th, the city announced that Mayor Jeong Heon-yul, along with Choi Jeong-gil, head of the Jeonbuk Western Veterans Affairs Office, visited Lee Seok-gyu to deliver a presidential consolation gift and expressed respect and gratitude for his patriotism and dedication to the country's independence.

Lee Seok-gyu, while attending Gwangju Normal School in 1943, organized the 'Mudeung Reading Club' with his classmates, striving to establish a historical perspective through reading meetings and dedicating himself to the independence of the homeland.

Mayor Jeong Heon-yul said, "Thanks to the independence activists who devoted themselves to the country's independence, the Republic of Korea exists today," and added, "I deeply thank the activist who laid the foundation for peace and prosperity."

He continued, "The city will also do its best to honor and respect the national veterans."

Meanwhile, Iksan City is carrying out projects to cultivate the spirit of patriotism, such as the 'Iksan Independence Movement Sanctification Project' to remember and commemorate the independence spirit of the ancestors, and the 'National Veterans Nameplate Installation' to honor national veterans.
