Phenol Resin 2000ℓ Leak in Gyeongbuk Gimcheon... No Groundwater Inflow On the 14th, the site of the phenolic resin production plant in Gimcheon where phenolic resin leaked.


[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Dong-wook] At around 1:38 a.m. on the 14th, 2000 liters of phenolic resin leaked during a transfer operation at a phenolic resin production factory in Eomo-myeon, Gimcheon-si, Gyeongbuk.


Upon receiving the report, the fire authorities deployed 20 pieces of equipment including pump trucks and about 100 personnel from special rescue teams to handle the leaked phenolic resin using absorbent pads and other materials. The accident occurred during the process of transferring the produced phenolic resin to an internal storage tank.


A fire department official stated, "The leaked phenolic resin did not flow into rivers or groundwater."


Phenolic resin is a thermosetting resin obtained from the reaction of phenol and formaldehyde, classified as a mid-grade engineering plastic, and is used as an adhesive material among other applications. It is not as toxic as phenol, which is a highly harmful substance to the human body.
