Police Arrests 40s Man Who Killed His 70s Mother and Surrendered... Court Cites Risk of Evidence Tampering and Escape Seoul Central District Court, Seocho-dong, Seoul.

[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seok-jin] A man in his 40s who surrendered to the police after killing his mother in her 70s was ultimately detained.

According to the court on the 14th, Kim Tae-gyun, the chief judge in charge of warrants at the Seoul Central District Court, conducted a pre-arrest hearing for Jang, who was charged with killing a direct ascendant, starting at 3 p.m. the previous day. At around 10:30 p.m. the same day, the judge issued an arrest warrant for Jang.

Judge Kim stated, "The facts of the crime have been substantiated, and considering the seriousness of the case and the progress of the investigation, it is recognized that the suspect may destroy evidence or flee."

Jang is accused of killing his mother, who was in her 70s, with a weapon at his home in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, in the early morning of the 11th.

On the same day at 4:30 a.m., Jang went to the Gwanak Police Station and surrendered. The police found the mother's body at the crime scene and arrested Jang.

Subsequently, on the 12th, the police applied for an arrest warrant for Jang on charges of killing a direct ascendant.

The exact motive for the killing has not been revealed, but neighbors reportedly testified that on the day of the incident, the mother and Jang had an argument over a credit card bill of 1 million won.

When Jang appeared at the Seoul Central District Court in Seocho-dong, Seoul, tied with handcuffs for the pre-arrest hearing the previous day, he answered the press's question about the motive for the killing by saying, "In a fit of anger." When asked about the reason for surrendering, he replied, "Because I regret it so much."
