[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] A man in his 20s who left his quarantine location without permission for about 20 minutes one day before the end of his self-quarantine was sentenced to a suspended fine.
On the 13th, Kim In-taek, Chief Judge of Criminal Division 5 at the Seoul Southern District Court, announced that he sentenced university student Lee Mo (21), who was indicted for violating the Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Act, to a fine of 2 million won with a one-year suspended sentence.
Lee was indicted after leaving his home for about 20 minutes to visit a stationery store near his house one day before the end of his self-quarantine, despite being instructed to self-quarantine until April 11 after entering the country from Turkey on March 28 this year.
The court stated, "The defendant violated quarantine measures during the national disaster situation caused by the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), thereby posing a risk of spreading the infectious disease."
However, the court considered that Lee went out briefly one day before the end of his self-quarantine to complete a school assignment, made efforts to prevent infection by wearing a mask, and that he ultimately tested negative for COVID-19, meaning there was no substantial risk.
