Honam University Chinese International Students Practice the 'Meaning of Love' Beyond Borders

Volunteer Activities in Flood-Affected Areas

Honam University Chinese International Students Practice the 'Meaning of Love' Beyond Borders

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Chinese international students enrolled at Honam University (President Park Sangcheol) practiced the meaning of "neighborly love volunteerism" beyond borders by visiting villages affected by heavy rain floods and carrying out volunteer activities.

According to Honam University on the 13th, this volunteer activity involved the "China Angel Volunteer Team," consisting of 14 Chinese international students majoring in Aviation Service, along with about 50 members including the Student Council (President Kang Minwoo) and the Love Sharing Center (Director Jin Kyungmi) social volunteer group.

On that day, the students conducted volunteer work such as organizing flooded goods and disposing of flood waste in Shindeok Village, Songjeong 2-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City.

Shindeok Village, where they volunteered, is a low-lying area prone to frequent flooding. From the 7th for three days, the accumulated rainfall reached 500mm, causing severe damage due to the heavy downpour.

The volunteers organized household items in flooded houses where heavy equipment could not be used due to narrow roads, collected garbage and waste, and cleaned up trash and debris throughout the village.

Ding Mengsa, a Chinese international student who participated in the volunteer work, said, "I heard news that heavy rain also caused great damage in China, so I was very worried and saddened. Helping those affected by the flood in my homeland eased my burden and gave me a sense of fulfillment."

Earlier, 15 volunteers from the Love Sharing Center (Director Jin Kyungmi) carried out flood recovery activities on the 10th by organizing study rooms at the regional children's center in Seonam-dong (Seonun District), Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, which was flooded by the heavy rain, and by taking out, washing, and organizing household goods and daily necessities at a house near Songsan Amusement Park.

Director Jin Kyungmi said, "The rural volunteer activity originally planned for the end of last month was postponed due to COVID-19, and although it is unfortunate that unexpected heavy rain occurred, we shifted to activities helping disaster victims. This time, I feel rewarded that even international students participated in the volunteer work."
