Gwangju Seo-gu, 'Day of Remembrance' Event for Comfort Women Victims on the 14th

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Seo Daeseok) will hold a commemorative event for the Japanese Military Comfort Women Victims Memorial Day in front of the Statue of Peace located in the Seo-gu Office Plaza on the 14th.

According to Seo-gu on the 13th, the 14th marks the day in 1991 when the late grandmother Kim Hak-soon first testified about the Japanese military comfort women victimization at a press conference, and it was officially designated as a national memorial day in December 2017.

This commemorative event will be held for about 40 minutes with joint flower offerings, commemorative speeches, reading of memorial writings, and memorial performances, involving future generations such as youth and key figures of the local community to recognize and spread awareness of the Japanese military comfort women issue as a matter of women's human rights, peace, and solidarity.

Following the reading of memorial writings by students of Gwangju Sangil Girls' High School, who learn from the courage of the Japanese military comfort women victims and remember their pain, a performance is also scheduled where the youth club ‘Kkumji’ of Hwajeong Youth Culture House in Gwangju will sing songs such as ‘Sonyeo’, ‘Gasiri’, and ‘Sangsahwa’, conveying a small message of comfort to soothe the grandmothers' wounds.

Seo Daeseok, Mayor of Seo-gu, said, “This event was prepared to widely inform local residents about the Japanese military comfort women issue and to remember it so that such a tragic history never happens again,” adding, “I hope it will be a time to offer some comfort to the victim grandmothers.”
