Police Launch Special Crackdown on 'Random Assaults' and Public Place Violence... Task Force Assigned

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] The National Police Agency announced on the 13th that it will conduct special crackdowns on chronic violent acts in everyday life spaces, such as 'street thugs,' during September and October.

This crackdown was prepared to prevent violent acts that increase public anxiety and inconvenience in places such as streets and public areas, following recent incidents like the 'Seoul Station assault case' and the 'Gangnam Station female assault case.'

The main targets of the crackdown are violent acts occurring in public places such as streets, public transportation, hospitals, restaurants, and government offices, including assault, injury, threats, extortion, coercion, property damage, obstruction of business, and fare evasion.

The police will designate the police station's violent crime unit as a dedicated investigation team and will strictly punish not only serious cases involving weapons or major damage but also minor cases by comprehensively investigating habitual offenses and the risk of recidivism.

Regarding victims' responses to perpetrators' actions, justifiable self-defense will be actively applied, and customized personal protection measures such as providing smartwatches, strengthening patrols in residential areas, and post-monitoring will be promoted so that victims can report safely. Protective activities including psychological counseling and medical expense support for victims will also be carried out simultaneously.

A National Police Agency official stated, "Through continuous crackdowns and preventive activities, we will eradicate chronic violent acts around daily life that threaten public safety and peaceful daily life," urging active reporting and tips.
