[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] Volvo Cars Korea unveiled and began sales of the flagship sports utility vehicles (SUV) XC90 and XC60 T8 R-Design limited edition at Layer 10 in Seongdong-gu, Seoul on the 13th. R-Design is one of the top-tier levels alongside Inscription, characterized by a sporty silhouette and details inspired by dynamic performance, as well as excellent responsiveness and control. Full customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in September.
The newly launched XC90 and XC60 T8 R-Design editions are limited models equipped with advanced convenience features for drivers, a PHEV powertrain delivering a powerful total output of 405 horsepower, and IntelliSafe. In particular, to expand the adoption of eco-friendly electrified powertrains, they offer industry-leading free warranty and consumable replacement services for 5 years or 100,000 km as standard. Priced approximately 10 million KRW lower than the Inscription, the XC90 R-Design is priced at 92.9 million KRW, and the XC60 R-Design at 71 million KRW.
The exterior and interior of the R-Design edition reflect new details. The front features signature LED headlights known as ‘Thor’s Hammer,’ along with an R-Design exclusive mesh grille and black high-gloss decor to create a strong image. The sides are equipped with black high-gloss side mirror covers and window decor, roof rails, and 20-inch or 22-inch black diamond-cut alloy wheels.
The interior emphasizes a modern sensibility with a dashboard and center console finished with metal mesh decor inlays. It is equipped with an R-Design exclusive leather sports steering wheel and sports pedals. The exclusive seats, made of leather and fabric or nubuck mix with seat cushion extension functionality, provide excellent support. Additionally, a 12.3-inch digital display instrument cluster, a 9-inch touchscreen Sensus, and a head-up display (HUD) are applied. The advanced driver assistance technology ‘Pilot Assist II,’ which can maintain a set distance from the vehicle ahead and drive up to 140 km/h, is also standard.
The XC90 and XC60 R-Design editions are launched with a T8 plug-in hybrid twin engine, an 8-speed automatic Geartronic transmission, and an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. The T8 plug-in hybrid twin engine consists of a supercharged and turbocharged inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine, a 65 kW electric motor, and an 11.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. It delivers a powerful total output of 405 horsepower and a maximum torque of 40.8 kg·m (2200-5400 rpm). The driving range per single charge is 30 km for the XC90 R-Design and 33 km for the XC60 R-Design.
Additionally, it is equipped with an advanced sports chassis featuring more robust spring and damper settings for cornering, along with a drive mode selector that allows enjoyment of six different driving modes.
The R-Design edition comes standard with the advanced safety system ‘IntelliSafe.’ Based on ADAS located at the top of the front glass, it helps mitigate a wide range of potential scenarios that could cause accidents on the road. City Safety with steering support identifies vehicles, pedestrians, and large animals on the road and helps avoid or mitigate collisions through automatic braking and collision avoidance systems in situations where accidents are anticipated. In addition, advanced safety technologies such as lane departure mitigation, oncoming lane collision avoidance, blind spot information system, and active high beam control are all standard features.
Yoon Mo Lee, CEO of Volvo Cars Korea, stated, “We have prepared a limited edition model with competitive pricing and excellent product quality so that more people can experience the value of Volvo’s new eco-friendly electrified powertrain,” adding, “We hope that through the T8 R-Design edition model, customers will experience the new driving pleasure Volvo presents in the essential environmental era.”
