In golf, the term 'carry' has five meanings.
1. It refers to the distance the ball travels through the air from the point it is hit until it lands (Carry is the distance the ball travels through the air). The distance the ball rolls after landing is called roll. The total distance is the sum of carry and roll (The combined carry and roll of the ball is total distance). My average drive carries about 220 yards on a windless day.
2. It is the distance the ball must travel in the air to clear penalty areas such as bunkers and water hazards, or to reach the target beyond trees (The distance a ball must travel in the air in order to clear something or reach some destination). To clear that lake, the ball will need to carry over 250 yards. To score well, it is important to know the exact carry distance for each of your clubs.
3. Carry over refers to a situation where the outcome cannot be decided within the stipulated number of holes, so the match continues to the next hole or next game. The skins game is a typical example. The match is carried over. 4. The player who tees off first on the teeing area is called the 'Honor.' 'Carried honor' means that if the previous hole was tied, the player retains the priority to tee off first on the next hole.
If the previous hole was also tied, the order is determined by the score on the hole before that (The player with the lowest score on the preceding hole gets honors on the next tee. In tie, the order of hitting from the previous tee carries over). 5. Carry-on or carry-on bag refers to a small piece of luggage that can be taken on board the plane when going on a golf trip. The term carrier is considered Konglish.
A (Golfer): How long is the carry-over for that large pond?
B (Caddy): You'll have to carry it 150 yards to get onto the green.
A: Do you think I can carry it over with a seven iron?
B: Not really, the wind is against you and the green is elevated. You'd better use a five iron.
