Kaesong Industrial Complex Companies Emergency Committee Supports Flood-Affected North Korean Workers with Quarantine Supplies and More

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] The Kaesong Industrial Complex Emergency Response Committee resolved on the 12th to provide food and quarantine supplies to North Korean workers and disaster victims who had worked together in the Kaesong Industrial Complex, which suffered flood damage.

According to recent reports, heavy rains caused flooding in Kaesong City, North Hwanghae Province, and surrounding areas. In addition, Kaesong City has been completely locked down due to the novel coronavirus infection, causing great suffering to North Korean workers and their families who have worked together in the Kaesong Industrial Complex for over 10 years.

An official from the Emergency Response Committee said, "It is heartbreaking to think of the North Korean workers and their families who have worked together in the Kaesong Industrial Complex for over 10 years and are now suffering greatly. Although most companies have limited capacity as the complex has been closed for nearly five years, we want to support our workers, who are like family, even if only a little."

The official added, "We hope to overcome this disaster quickly and eventually resume the Kaesong Industrial Complex so that we can reunite. We ask the North Korean government to generously accept our intentions on a humanitarian basis, and we also hope that our government, while understanding the severed inter-Korean relations, will consider the current situation where civilian contact is blocked and negotiate with the North."
