[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Dong-wook] Gyeongju City, Gyeongbuk Province, announced on the 12th that it will expand infrastructure to create a bicycle-friendly city, including the 'Munmu Daewang Bike Road,' which stretches for 100 ri.

The new bicycle roads planned for completion next year include the 38.3 km section from Bobul-ro Samgeori to Munmu Daewang Tomb called the 'Munmu Daewang Bike Road' and a 2.3 km section from Gyeongju Museum to Gyeongbuk Forest Environment Research Institute.

The bicycle roads developed by the city so far include ▲ the East Coast Bicycle Road from Suryum-ri, Yangnam-myeon to Oryu-ri, Gampo-eup (approximately 30 km) ▲ the Hyeongsan River Sangsaeng Road from Yugum-ri, Gangdong-myeon to Oksan Seowon, Angang-eup (19.5 km) ▲ dedicated bicycle roads along the Seocheon and Bukcheon riverbanks ▲ and about 100 km of shared bicycle and pedestrian roads in the downtown area.

Recently, to alleviate inconveniences for cyclists, temporary access roads were installed at two bicycle bridges that were discontinuous sections of the Hyeongsan River bicycle road, where bicycle use has sharply increased. The Hyeongsan River bicycle road, implemented by the Busan Regional Land Management Office, is a 16.4 km section from Hwangseong Bridge to Gangdong Bridge and is scheduled for completion in 2021.

Additionally, since February, Gyeongju City has enrolled citizens with addresses in Gyeongju (including foreigners) in 'Citizen Bicycle Insurance' automatically without any separate procedures or conditions. The insurance benefits apply not only within Gyeongju but also for accidents occurring in other regions.

Mayor Ju Nak-young of Gyeongju said, "We will continuously promote various projects so that citizens can ride bicycles safely and conveniently, including expanding bicycle roads, establishing a public bicycle system, creating bicycle safety education centers, and implementing citizen bicycle insurance."
