"Convenience Stores and Driving License Academies Also Accept It"…Mobile Driver's License Surpasses 1 Million

[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The number of subscribers using mobile driver's licenses at convenience stores and other locations surpassed 1 million within 50 days of its launch.

SK Telecom, KT, LG Uplus, the National Police Agency, and the Korea Road Traffic Authority announced that the number of subscribers to the 'PASS Mobile Driver's License Verification Service,' launched at the end of June, exceeded 1 million as of the 9th.

PASS Mobile Driver's License is a service that allows users to register their driver's license under their name in the PASS applications of the three telecom companies and use it for driver qualification and identity verification both online and offline. It is the first commercialized digital official ID in Korea, approved through the Ministry of Science and ICT's ICT Regulatory Sandbox in September last year. Users can use the service by signing up for the PASS app, agreeing to the terms, and photographing their driver's license to register it in the app.

At convenience store chains CU and GS25, PASS Mobile Driver's License is used to verify whether a customer is a minor. It allows easy age verification simply by scanning a barcode or QR code. Since July, PASS Mobile Driver's License has also been utilized at 27 driver's license examination centers nationwide for driver's license renewal, reissuance, and issuance of English driver's licenses.

The three telecom companies and the National Police Agency are also discussing plans to apply the service to frontline police administration, such as traffic police checkpoints. They are considering introducing mobile IDs for identity verification in financial transactions and mobile communication services as well.

The three telecom companies stated, "We will focus on expanding partnerships so that PASS Mobile Driver's License subscribers can experience greater convenience."
