[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] One Daejeon City Hall official has been arrested on charges of bribery during the permit process for the Doan District development project. Another official and two external urban planning committee members (university professors), who had arrest warrants requested on the same charges, had their warrants dismissed due to potential legal disputes.
According to the Daejeon District Court on the 12th, the court issued an arrest warrant for one of the two officials from the Daejeon City Regeneration Housing Headquarters and two external urban planning committee members during the warrant hearings held the previous day.
However, the arrest warrants for the other official and two external committee members were dismissed, citing factual and legal disputes.
They are accused of receiving bribes from a representative of Company A, which is involved in the development project of the Doan 2nd Phase Special Planning Zone (tentatively named 2-6 District, Blocks 9, 30, and 39).
Additionally, some officials are suspected of investing using information about urban development projects obtained through their official duties.
Company A is in the process of developing apartments (1,171 units) and detached houses (71 units) on a 157,600㎡ site in the Doan 2-6 District. In February, they submitted a proposal for designation as an urban development district to Yuseong District Office. Subsequently, in April, Yuseong District Office forwarded the related documents to Daejeon City.
However, issues arose when allegations surfaced that Company A provided bribes and entertainment to officials and external committee members who had influence over the project’s progress.
The prosecution has already arrested Mr. B, a representative of Company A, on charges of providing gift certificates and entertainment to these individuals.
Nonetheless, the prosecution stated that it is still difficult to publicly disclose the details of the charges against the officials and external committee members involved in the Doan District corruption allegations.
