[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] Former Vice President Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential candidate in the United States, has nominated Senator Kamala Harris as his vice-presidential running mate. This is the first time in a U.S. presidential election that a Black woman has been nominated as a vice-presidential candidate. Harris is also considered Asian American, as her mother is of Indian descent.

On the 11th (local time), the Biden campaign announced on its website that Senator Harris had been nominated as the vice-presidential candidate. Biden’s team revealed the nomination through a statement titled "TOGETHER WE WILL BEAT DONALD TRUMP."

The Biden campaign explained, "Harris, the first Black woman to represent California in the U.S. Senate, grew up believing in America’s promise and fighting to ensure that promise is fulfilled for all Americans."

Biden himself explained the reason for choosing Harris on Twitter. He emphasized, "I am honored to select a fearless warrior for ordinary people and one of the finest public servants as my running mate."

Biden also introduced the connection between his late son Beau Biden and Harris. Biden referred to Harris’s time as California Attorney General, saying, "When Kamala was Attorney General, she worked closely with Beau," mentioning his son Beau, who passed away earlier. The Washington Post (WP) reported that at the time, Biden’s late son Beau was the Attorney General of Delaware.

He said, "I saw them fight big banks, uplift workers, and protect women and children from abuse," adding, "I was proud then. And now I am proud to have her with me in this campaign."

Democratic figures such as former President Bill Clinton and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also welcomed Biden’s choice. Former President Clinton said, "It’s an amazing choice. Harris and Biden will be great partners and a strong team."

On the other hand, President Donald Trump quickly criticized Harris. Immediately after Harris’s nomination as the vice-presidential candidate, President Trump posted a video on Twitter highlighting that Harris is a radical leftist and that she strongly criticized Biden during the Democratic presidential primary.
