[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] A British national who illegally filmed Korean women and distributed the footage on the internet, causing public outrage, has been handed over to the prosecution.
The Cyber Safety Bureau of the National Police Agency announced on the 12th that they arrested a British national identified as A on charges including violation of the Sexual Violence Punishment Act and sent him to the prosecution.
According to the police, A is suspected of illegally filming women on the streets and scenes involving physical contact in the Itaewon and Hongdae areas of Seoul in 2018.
Investigations revealed that A uploaded these illegal videos to an internet site he operated called "Hanguk Yeoseong-eun Swipda" (Korean Women Are Easy) and charged each registered member $27 (approximately 30,000 KRW).
To prevent secondary damage, the police shut down the site and deleted 198GB of illegal footage stored on A’s social network service (SNS) accounts and cloud storage both domestically and abroad.
The police confirmed that A left the country immediately after the crime and promptly requested an Interpol red notice. A was later arrested by Danish police in November 2019. He was repatriated to Korea on the 31st of last month and was detained on the 2nd of this month.
A police official stated, "We will expand the investigation to paid members of the illegal footage distribution site operated by A."
Meanwhile, following the "Telegram Nth Room" case, the police launched a special digital sex crime investigation unit in March this year and plan to continue digital sex crime investigations until the end of the year. As of the 7th of this month, 1,710 digital sex crime suspects have been arrested, of whom 174 have been detained.
