Creating a 'Nangdokgeuk' and Observing Celestial Bodies for a Meaningful Summer... Operation of Changsin Communication Workshop Program

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jongno-gu (District Mayor Kim Young-jong) will operate a reading play and experiential programs during August and September, respectively, so that local children can enjoy the rich historical and cultural resources unique to Jongno and spend meaningful time.

First, at Areumkkum Library (242-7 Sungin-dong), from August 11 to September 26, as part of the ‘2020 Library Multicultural Service Support Project’ supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, a theater play classroom program will be held. This is a reading play prepared for the summer vacation called the Asian mythology story "The Pocket of the King of Heaven and Earth."

The target audience is 2nd and 3rd graders in elementary school, held every Tuesday and Wednesday from August 11 to 19, and every Saturday in September.

Over a total of 8 sessions, children will read Asian myths together and experience group theater play and script adaptation.

Children will read the play "The Pocket of the King of Heaven and Earth," assign roles, practice reading performances, and participate in the final presentation process. Through this, they will develop creativity, expressiveness, confidence, and learn what it means to live together.

The instructors include playwright Lee Si-won, actors, and choreographers. Lee Si-won was selected as a resident writer for the ‘2020 Library Resident Writer Support Project,’ where writers reside in the library until December this year to share the value of literature and operate related experiential programs. For more details about the program, please contact Areumkkum Library.

Next, at Changsin Communication Workshop (47 Changsin 6-ga-gil), from August 21 to September 25, a weekly children’s science experience program called "Sky, Earth, and Stars" will be operated. The target is children aged 6 to under 13 residing in Jongno-gu.

With a cultural interpreter, children explore the alleys around the Changsin-dong cut area, learn about local culture and history, and participate in scientific inquiry experiments and celestial observation.

In particular, activities such as making rocks, granite, basalt, learning about the Earth's interior, experiments on the moon’s shape changes, and making moon movement models will be conducted to foster children’s scientific curiosity and imagination.

The program tuition is completely free, and the material fee is 20,000 KRW. When children under 10 participate, accompaniment by a guardian is mandatory, and there is no separate resting area for guardians.

Additionally, the program schedule may be postponed or changed due to weather conditions such as typhoons or rain.

Applications can be made via Google Forms by referring to the Jongno Cultural Foundation website. More detailed information about "Sky, Earth, and Stars" is provided through Changsin Communication Workshop.

At Hwanghakjeong National Archery Exhibition Hall (15-32 Sajik-ro 9-gil, Jongno-gu), a play event for the whole family to enjoy during summer vacation has been prepared. The program "A Midsummer Day’s Archery Playground" will be held on August 22. The target is 15 elementary and middle school students.

From 4 PM to 7 PM, after making your own fan with pressed flower petals, traditional Korean games and national archery experiences will be conducted. Applications are currently being accepted through the Jongno Cultural Foundation website, and the participation fee is 10,000 KRW per person for archery and experience costs.

District Mayor Kim Young-jong said, “We will continue to operate diverse cultural arts education programs to support the healthy growth of local children,” and added, “All programs will be conducted in compliance with social distancing guidelines to prevent the spread of infection within the region.”
