Ahead of Liberation Day, Yoon Sang-hyun Mentions 'Park Geun-hye Pardon'... "Unity Instead of Division"

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Yoon Sang-hyun, an independent lawmaker and former chairman of the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee, has called for the pardon of former President Park Geun-hye ahead of Liberation Day, urging to "unite Gwanghwamun Square, which has divided the people in half."

On the 11th, Yoon said on Facebook, "Leadership of tolerance is about transforming Gwanghwamun Square from a symbol of division into a symbol of unity, and the shortcut to that is resolving the issue of former President Park."

He emphasized, "The only person who can resolve this is President Moon Jae-in," adding, "The ordeal endured by former President Park has been extremely heavy both politically and humanely. She has already been imprisoned for 40 months, the longest among all former presidents."

Yoon stated, "Without resolving the issue concerning former President Park, Gwanghwamun Square will remain divided between candlelight rallies and Taegeukgi rallies, making unity impossible and perpetuating the misfortune of history," and added, "Only forgiveness and reconciliation can turn the candlelight and Taegeukgi into 'us' rather than enemies, and that forgiveness and reconciliation is 'leadership of tolerance.'"

He concluded, "I repeatedly urge for a bold decision to unite the Republic of Korea," and said, "The tolerance emphasized by President Moon is the only solution to unite Gwanghwamun Square, which has divided the people in half."
