[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] The Hyundai Avante is a vehicle whose name itself symbolizes a specific segment. While the presence of representative models is diminishing due to aggressive lineup expansions by both domestic and imported car brands, the Avante still firmly holds its position in the compact sedan market.
The 7th generation model, released in April this year, once again confirms the Avante's long-standing presence in the domestic market. It adds sophistication to a generally reliable entry-level car through sleek design and various advanced safety and convenience features. As a result, even four months after its launch, the Avante continues to perform well, with customers having to wait about two months after ordering to receive their vehicles.
The most anticipated aspect of the new model launch was undoubtedly the design. Since the previous model struggled with a design that divided opinions sharply, there was keen interest in how Hyundai would revise the exterior. Ultimately, the 7th generation Avante has succeeded in drawing praise that "the design is definitely improved compared to before."
The exterior design remains sleek, with clear lines dominating the overall image. A particularly noticeable element is the more refined triangular headlamps, which had sparked controversy in the previous model. While the earlier headlamps had a more precise triangular shape, this time curves are used to create a softer, upward eye shape. Sharp, elongated straight lines are actively employed on the sides and rear to complete a sleek impression.
The interior emphasizes simplicity to reduce any sense of cramped space. Efforts to enhance openness are evident through the application of a horizontal layout similar to that of the Grandeur. The driver-centric design is also a feature. The 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and the horizontally extended 10.25-inch navigation system are arranged to slightly wrap around the driver's seat, improving driving convenience. However, the center console structure that separates the driver and passenger seats can make the interior feel cramped for the front passenger.
Once driving begins, the Avante’s strengths and weaknesses become clearer. In urban or low-to-medium speed zones, the smooth ride and stability are impressive. However, at high speeds, there are some shortcomings. When accelerating at high speed, the power to surge forward is somewhat lacking. While not causing significant inconvenience, there is a noticeable dullness during overtaking. Wind noise at high speeds is also considerable. Nonetheless, stability remains intact even when increasing speed, and the ride comfort exceeds expectations, which are definite advantages.
The test model is equipped with a Smartstream gasoline 1.6 engine, delivering a maximum output of 123 horsepower and a peak torque of 15.7 kgf·m. The official combined fuel efficiency is 14.5 km/ℓ.
The advanced features, fully equipped without any shortcomings, are among the Avante’s attractive points. All trims come with Lane Following Assist (LFA), Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA). Notably, the navigation-based Smart Cruise Control significantly reduces driving fatigue.
The price of the All-New Avante gasoline models is ▲Smart 15.31 million KRW ▲Modern 18.99 million KRW ▲Inspiration 23.92 million KRW, while the LPi (for general sale) models are ▲Style 18.09 million KRW ▲Smart 20.34 million KRW ▲Modern 21.67 million KRW. Hyundai plans to expand the Avante lineup by launching hybrid and N Line models within the year.
