Up to 150mm of Rain Falls in Central Region Over the Weekend... Typhoon 'Jangmi' to Affect Tomorrow

[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] On the weekend of the 8th and 9th, the central region experienced heavy rainfall exceeding 150mm. On the 10th, strong and heavy rain accompanied by gusts and thunder/lightning is expected in northern Seoul, northern Gyeonggi, and northern Yeongseo in Gangwon Province.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) reported that from late afternoon the previous day until the afternoon of the 10th, very heavy rain of 30 to 50mm per hour accompanied by gusts and thunder/lightning fell mainly in the central region. The cumulative rainfall exceeded 150mm.

Cumulative rainfall at major locations from 6 p.m. the previous day to 4 p.m. on the 10th was 133.5mm in Dobong-gu, Seoul; 99.5mm in Gangdong-gu; 98.0mm in Seocho-gu; 96.5mm in Gangnam-gu; 165.5mm in Cheongsan-myeon, Yeoncheon-gun, Gyeonggi; 161.0mm in Yongin; 161.5mm in Oechon-ri, Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do; and 150mm at Wonhyobong, Yesan, Chungnam.

The expected rainfall over the next three days (9th to 11th) is 100 to 200mm in the central region, southern region, Jeju Island, and the five western islands. In particular, northern Seoul, northern Gyeonggi, northern Yeongseo in Gangwon, the southern coast of Jeonnam, Gyeongnam, southern and mountainous areas of Jeju Island, and the vicinity of Jirisan are expected to receive more than 300mm of rain.

On the evening of the 10th, the entire country will be cloudy, with very heavy rain accompanied by gusts and thunder/lightning in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, Gangwon Province, northern Chungcheong, and the southern coast of Gyeongnam. Rain is also expected in Jeju Island, while other areas may experience scattered raindrops.

The KMA emphasized, "Due to recent heavy rainfall weakening the ground, and with more rain expected until the 11th, please be cautious of flooding in low-lying areas and farmland, landslides, and retaining wall collapses to prevent damage from the rain." They also urged, "Since very heavy rain may fall locally causing sudden rises in streams or rivers in a short time, campers in mountainous and valley areas should pay special attention to safety accidents."

The KMA forecasted very heavy and heavy rain centered on the Seoul metropolitan area in the early morning of the 10th. Additionally, due to the influence of the northward-moving Typhoon No. 5 'Jangmi,' rain will fall nationwide, and areas directly affected by the typhoon including the southern coast of Jeonnam, Gyeongnam, southern and mountainous areas of Jeju Island, and the vicinity of Jirisan are expected to receive more than 300mm of cumulative rainfall.
