[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun visited the Gwangju and Jeonnam areas, which suffered extensive damage due to heavy rain, on the 9th to inspect the recovery sites.
On the same day, Prime Minister Chung stopped by the Yeongsangang Flood Control Office in Seo-gu, Gwangju, where he received a nationwide flood management report from Vice Minister of Environment Hong Jeong-gi and others. He also connected via video call with Kim Jong-seok, the head of the Korea Meteorological Administration, to receive a weather forecast report.
At the site, Prime Minister Chung emphasized, "The Korea Meteorological Administration, as the provider of weather forecasts, and the flood control offices and Ministry of Environment, as the users, must properly and meticulously evaluate the weather conditions together to improve the accuracy of forecasts."
Additionally, Prime Minister Chung visited the damage site in Osan-myeon, Gokseong-gun, Jeonnam, where a landslide on the 7th caused a house burial accident resulting in casualties, and offered condolences to the victims. He said, "I appreciate Jeonnam Province's active efforts to prepare damage response measures and support the disaster victims."
Furthermore, Prime Minister Chung visited the damage site in Mujeong-myeon, Damyang-gun, to console the disaster victims. He stated, "While we must quickly restore the damage, we also need to establish fundamental measures to prevent such disasters from recurring," adding, "I will recommend to the President that the affected areas be promptly declared special disaster zones."
