Seongdong-gu Eco-friendly Industry Experience Center 'Dureundureun Saehwalyong School' Resumes in September... Upcycling Design Products from Discarded Waste Like Coffee Grounds for Interior Accessories
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) will reopen the ‘Dureun Dureun Upcycling School’ at the Seongdong-gu Eco-friendly Industry Experience Center, which had been closed for a long period since February due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), starting in September.
The Eco-friendly Industry Experience Learning Center is a space designed to allow visitors to experience future energy and upcycling, featuring a kiosk zone, eco-friendly industry introduction video zone, classrooms, and an EM multifunction device. It is located on the 2nd floor of the Seoul Upcycling Plaza.
Since 2017, it has been operating experiential and educational programs related to recycling and upcycling.
This upcycling school program involves instructors who have completed specialized upcycling education and offers courses such as ▲ making interior accessories using coffee grounds ▲ making wallets from leftover leather ▲ creating accessory holders using dreamcatchers, allowing participants to experience the process of transforming discarded waste into sensibly designed works of art.
A district official stated, “By directly experiencing the process where discarded waste transforms into practical items with new designs, not only children but also adults are reminded of the importance of resource utilization, which has consistently received positive responses.”
Applications for the program have been open since the 3rd and can be submitted via the Seongdong-gu website or by phone through the Seongdong-gu Office’s Cleaning Administration Division. Both adults and children can participate, and in accordance with COVID-19 prevention guidelines, up to 10 participants per session will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis to practice social distancing.
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “The Eco-friendly Industry Experience Learning Center is a hub space where many residents and children cultivate imagination to convert waste into resources through sharing and practice protecting the global environment. We will continue to make efforts, including promoting various projects, to foster greater interest and empathy toward the upcycling industry, which is emerging as a future high value-added industry.”
