Collapse of Geumgokgyo Embankment, Flooding in Low-lying Areas of Sanggwi, Hado, Yongjeong, and Gwiseok-ri

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hong Jae-hee] Due to the collapse of the embankment of the Seomjin River in Gwiseok-ri, Namwon-si, Jeonbuk, about 300 residents were urgently evacuated.
According to Namwon city officials on the 8th, around 12:50 PM today, the embankment of Geumgokgyo Bridge, which connects Geumji-myeon in Namwon to Gokseong in Jeonnam, collapsed.
Due to the embankment collapse, about 300 residents from four villages?Sanggwi, Hado, Yongjeong, and Gwiseok-ri?were urgently evacuated to the Geumji Munhwa Nuri Center.
According to the Jeonbuk Fire Headquarters and Iksan Regional Land Management Office, it is estimated that 50 to 100 meters of the Geumgokgyo Bridge embankment was washed away.
A Namwon city official stated, “Water from the river continues to flow into the low-lying Geumji-myeon due to the embankment collapse,” adding, “Since the rain continues, the damage is expected to worsen.”
