According to the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration on the 7th, the time when the most rain fell was recorded at 2:01 p.m. in Naju, Jeonnam, with 65.5mm per hour. Around the same time, Hwasun recorded 59mm per hour, and Pungam in Gwangju recorded 58.5mm per hour.
As torrential rain fell all day long in the Gwangju and Jeonnam areas, reports of damage caused by the rain were received in many places.
At around 3 p.m. that day, a drainage area around a road in Hwajeong-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City was damaged, causing rainwater to backflow and the road area to be closed.
Earlier, at around 2 p.m., part of the road in front of Sangmu Middle School in Seo-gu was also damaged. At that time, about 50mm of rain per hour fell in the Seo-gu area.
On the 7th, around 2 p.m., when a heavy rain warning was issued for the Gwangju area, a section of the road in front of Sangmu Middle School in Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, was damaged, causing traffic to be restricted. At that time, Seo-gu experienced rainfall of 50mm per hour.
In addition, flood damage reports were continuously received from Baegun-dong in Nam-gu and Yangdong in Seo-gu.
Gwangju Stream was closed to traffic due to flood concerns, and evacuation orders were issued to nearby merchants. Also, train operations between Gwangju Songjeong and Suncheon were suspended due to soil inflow between Hwasun and Nampyeong on the Gyeongjeon Line.
The Yeongsan River Flood Control Office issued a flood warning at 4 p.m. for the Jiseokcheon Naju-si (Nampyeonggyo) section and issued a flood advisory near the Yeongsan River Naju Bridge at 4:40 p.m.
In the Jeonnam area, more than 130 flood damage reports have been received so far.
At around 2:42 p.m., a flood advisory was issued due to the risk of flooding of a nearby stream at the Wonam-gil point in Naju Nampyeong, and earlier at 2:32 p.m., a road near Cheonam 2-gil in Dogok-myeon, Hwasun was submerged, and pumping vehicles were mobilized for drainage measures.
Currently, the Gwangju·Jeonnam Fire Headquarters situation room is receiving continuous reports of flood damage to houses and other areas, making hourly updates difficult.
On the 7th, around 3 p.m., in Hwajeong-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, where a heavy rain warning was issued in the Gwangju area, a road drainage outlet was damaged, causing rainwater to backflow and the surrounding road area to be closed.
Meanwhile, ‘heavy rain warnings’ have been issued in various parts of Gwangju and Jeonnam.
Heavy rain warnings have been issued for Gwangju, Hwasun, Naju, Suncheon, Gokseong, and Damyang, and heavy rain advisories have been issued for Heuksando, Hongdo, Muan, Jangheung, Sinan (excluding Heuksan-myeon), Mokpo, Yeonggwang, Hampyeong, Yeongam, Gwangyang, Boseong, Jangseong, and Gurye.
The accumulated daily rainfall so far has been recorded as 183mm in Hwasun, 178mm in Gwangju (Nam-gu), 177mm in Naju, 143mm in Okgwa (Gokseong), 120.5mm in Seongsamjae (Gurye), 119.5mm in Seokgok (Gokseong), and 112mm in Baegunsan (Gwangyang).
The Meteorological Administration expects an additional 80 to 150mm of rain, with some areas receiving up to 250mm, until the 8th.
A Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration official said, “Due to the recent heavy rain, the ground is weakened, and with the very heavy rain expected to continue, there are concerns about flooding of rivers and reservoirs, landslides, retaining wall collapses, flooding of farmland, lowlands, and underground roads, and other rain-related damage. Please thoroughly check risk factors in advance, prepare carefully, and refrain from going out or entering dangerous areas to prevent casualties.”
