17 Dead, 10 Missing Due to Continuous Heavy Rain... 2,500 Disaster Victims

[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] Due to heavy rain that has continued since the 1st of this month, 17 people have died and over 2,000 disaster victims have occurred within a week, causing continuous damage.


According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters on the 7th, as of 6 a.m. on that day, casualties include 17 dead, 10 missing, and 7 injured. Since most of the missing persons were found deceased, the death toll is expected to rise further.


There have been 1,447 households and 2,500 disaster victims across six cities and provinces, and 4,721 people have evacuated to gymnasiums and village halls. As of 4 a.m. that day, an additional 143 residents living in Cheorwon, Gangwon, and Yeoncheon and Paju, Gyeonggi, evacuated.


Facility damage is also significant. Farmland covering 8,161 hectares was submerged, and damage was reported to houses (1,949 cases), vinyl greenhouses (169 cases), and livestock barns and warehouses (1,179 cases). Public facilities such as roads and bridges (1,069 cases), rivers (382 cases), and landslides (515 cases) were also damaged.


Roads, railways, underpasses, and riverside parking lots remain restricted. Although water levels have receded, vehicles still cannot enter Seoul's Jamsu Bridge, Olympic-daero, and Gangbyeonbuk-ro.


Cumulative rainfall from the 1st to 5 a.m. on that day was recorded as 755.0 mm in Cheorwon, 715.5 mm in Yeoncheon, 588.0 mm in Hwacheon, 587.5 mm in Gapyeong, 432.5 mm in Jecheon, 403.5 mm in Dobong (Seoul), and 329.5 mm in Asan.
